🇫🇷 Paris

Our Take
Best for: Couples, food lovers, and art enthusiasts who want the world's greatest museum, cafe, and bakery culture in one walkable city
Paris earns its reputation. The Louvre is genuinely overwhelming (pick 2-3 things to see, not everything), the Musée d'Orsay is the world's best Impressionist collection, and Sainte-Chapelle's stained glass will stop you in your tracks. But the real Paris is in the neighborhoods: Le Marais for falafel and vintage shops, the 11th (Oberkampf/Ménilmontant) for natural wine bars, the 5th for old-school bistros. A proper croissant at a neighborhood boulangerie costs €1.20-1.50 and is the best thing you'll eat all day. A formule déjeuner (lunch set menu) at a bistro runs €14-22 for starter + main + glass of wine — genuine value for Paris. The Métro is excellent and a carnet of 10 tickets is €16.90. Skip the Champs-Élysées (overpriced chains) and spend that time in Montmartre, the Canal Saint-Martin, or the Jardin du Luxembourg.
When to Go
May–June or September–October. June has 16+ hours of daylight, outdoor terraces in full swing, and the Fête de la Musique (June 21, free concerts citywide). September has golden light, the rentrée cultural season, and fewer tourists than summer. Avoid August: half of Paris goes on vacation, neighborhood restaurants close, and you're left with tourist infrastructure.
Watch Out
The gold ring scam is Paris's most persistent con: someone 'finds' a gold ring near you and offers to sell it for €20 — it's worthless brass. Walk away. Pickpockets are aggressive on Métro Line 1 (Louvre-Champs Élysées), at the Eiffel Tower, and around Sacré-Cœur. Street vendors selling mini Eiffel Towers at Trocadéro will physically block your path — a firm 'non merci' and keep walking. Restaurant service charge is always included in French prices (service compris) — tipping beyond rounding up is not expected.
“The world's most complete city — it's expensive because it delivers on every single thing it promises.”
