Our Take

Best for: Art-loving couples and solo travelers who want Renaissance masterpieces by day and Chianti by evening

Florence is a small city with an absurd concentration of world-class art — the Uffizi alone has more Renaissance masterpieces per square meter than anywhere on Earth. But Florence's real trick is that it's also a food city. The bistecca alla fiorentina (massive T-bone steak, €45-55/kg) is a religious experience at Trattoria Mario or Il Latini. Lampredotto (tripe sandwich) from a street cart at Sant'Ambrogio Market costs €4 and is legitimately delicious. The historic center is tiny and walkable in a day, which makes day trips essential: the Chianti wine region is 45 minutes by bus, San Gimignano's medieval towers are an hour out, and Siena deserves a full day. Book the Uffizi and Accademia (David) weeks in advance — walk-up lines in summer exceed 3 hours. The Oltrarno neighborhood across the river has the best artisan workshops and restaurants without the tourist markup.

When to Go

May or September–October. May brings 22°C days, wisteria in bloom, and pre-summer pricing. September has harvest season in the Chianti vineyards — wineries are active and the light over the Tuscan hills is golden. Avoid June–August: Florence sits in a river valley that traps heat like an oven, regularly hitting 35°C+, and the Uffizi line wraps around the block.

Watch Out

Leather shop scams near San Lorenzo Market: 'Italian leather' goods are often imported — real Florentine leather comes from Santa Croce district workshops, not market stalls. Restaurants within sight of the Duomo charge 2-3x neighborhood prices for worse food — walk 10 minutes to Sant'Ambrogio or Oltrarno. The 'free' rose scam targets couples on Ponte Vecchio: someone hands a rose to your partner, then demands €5-10 from you.

The world's greatest living museum — spend mornings with Botticelli and afternoons with Brunello.
