🇮🇹 Rome

Our Take
Best for: History-obsessed couples and families who want to walk through 2,000 years of civilization between pasta courses
Rome is overwhelming in the best possible way. The Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine Hill alone justify the trip — but the real magic is turning a corner in Trastevere and finding a trattoria where nonna is hand-rolling tonnarelli at 11am. Eat in Testaccio (the actual food neighborhood, not the tourist center) — cacio e pepe at Felice a Testaccio or supplì at Supplizio will ruin you for Italian food anywhere else. The Vatican Museums require advance booking and early entry (7:30am tours) or you'll spend 3 hours in a line that wraps around the walls. Skip the tourist restaurants within 200m of the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain — walk 5 minutes in any direction and the quality doubles while prices halve. A proper Roman lunch (primo, secondo, house wine) at a neighborhood trattoria in Pigneto or San Lorenzo runs €18-25.
When to Go
April–May or mid-September to October. April averages 17°C, perfect for walking 15-20km/day across ancient ruins without melting. October has warm evenings, fewer crowds, and shoulder-season hotel pricing. Avoid July–August: 35°C+ heat makes the exposed Forum and Colosseum areas brutal, and Romans themselves flee the city.
Watch Out
The gladiator photo scam at the Colosseum: men dressed as centurions pose for 'free' photos then aggressively demand €20-50. Decline and walk away. Restaurant 'service charges' (coperto €2-5/person) are legal in Rome but some tourist-zone places add an additional servizio of 10-15% on top — check the bill carefully. Fake 'skip the line' ticket sellers near the Vatican and Colosseum sell overpriced packages you could book online for half the price.
“The world's greatest open-air museum — come for the ruins, stay for the carbonara.”
