Our Take

Best for: Food-obsessed couples and solo travelers who want world-class art, serious nightlife, and no tourist-trap fatigue

Madrid is where Spain actually lives — it doesn't have Barcelona's beaches or Seville's cathedral drama, but it has the Prado (arguably Europe's best art museum), La Latina's tapas bars, and a nightlife culture where dinner at 10pm is early. The food scene is legitimately excellent: a menú del día (2-3 courses with wine) at a local restaurant in Lavapiés or Malasaña runs €12-15, and a caña (small draft beer) at a classic bar on Calle Cava Baja comes with a free tapa. Retiro Park on a Sunday morning — rowboats, the glass palace, families everywhere — is one of Europe's great free hours. Day trips to Toledo (45 min by AVE high-speed train, €12-15 each way) and Segovia (30 min, €8-10) are genuinely worth it and less crowded than Madrid proper.

When to Go

May and October are the clear winners — 18-24°C, low rain, crowds manageable, and the city in full swing culturally. Spring has the bonus of the Feria de San Isidro in mid-May (the world's most prestigious bullfighting season, controversial but deeply Madrileño). Avoid July-August: temperatures hit 36-40°C regularly, and half of Madrid leaves — many smaller restaurants and bars close for August.

Watch Out

Restaurant bills sometimes include €2-4 per person in 'cubierto' (cover charge for bread/olives) that never appeared on the menu — ask before ordering. The rosemary-sprig scam near Plaza Mayor is relentless: if someone pushes a sprig into your hand, give it back immediately before they demand €20 for it. Fake plainclothes 'police' who ask to check your wallet for counterfeit bills are active near Sol and Gran Vía — real officers will always show a badge and never ask to handle your cash.

The most authentically Spanish city in Spain — eat late, sleep late, and skip the tourist menus near the Prado.
