Our Take

Best for: Beach-loving couples and adventurous foodies who want culture with their tan

Zanzibar is two destinations in one. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage labyrinth of carved doorways, spice markets, and rooftop restaurants where you'll eat the freshest seafood of your life — Forodhani Gardens night market serves grilled octopus, Zanzibar pizza (a stuffed crepe), and sugarcane juice for under $3 total. The east coast beaches (Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje) are postcard-perfect white sand with turquoise water. Paje is the kitesurfing capital of East Africa; Nungwi has the best sunset beach bars. The spice tours are genuinely fascinating — you'll smell nutmeg, clove, and vanilla growing wild. Jozani Forest's red colobus monkeys are found nowhere else on Earth. The island runs on 'pole pole' (slowly slowly) time, which is either charming or maddening depending on your wiring.

When to Go

June–October (dry season). July and August have the best weather — 27°C, almost no rain, gentle breezes. June and September are equally pleasant with thinner crowds. January–February is the short dry season and a good secondary window. Avoid April–May (long rains — heavy, daily, some hotels close) and November (short rains — less severe but still wet).

Watch Out

Zanzibar is a conservative Muslim island — cover shoulders and knees in Stone Town (not just mosques, but the streets too). Swimwear is for the beach only. Currency confusion is common: many places quote in USD but give change in Tanzanian shillings at unfavorable rates — agree on currency before ordering. The 'free' spice tour touts at the ferry terminal take you to overpriced tourist farms; book through your hotel or a reputable operator instead. Malaria is present year-round — take prophylaxis seriously.

The Indian Ocean's best-kept semi-secret — equal parts beach paradise and cultural immersion at prices that still feel like a steal.
