🇺🇸 New York City

Our Take
Best for: First-time visitors, foodies, theater lovers, and anyone who wants to walk 20,000 steps through the greatest city on Earth
New York is expensive — that's not news. What surprises people is how much of the best stuff is free or cheap. Central Park, the High Line, the Staten Island Ferry (free, with Statue of Liberty views), the Met (pay-what-you-wish for NY residents), and wandering the neighborhoods costs nothing. The food scene is unmatched: $1.50 pizza slices that are legitimately excellent, $8 dumplings in Flushing that rival anything in Shanghai, a $5 chopped cheese from a Harlem bodega. The mistake tourists make is staying in Times Square and eating at chain restaurants — Manhattan below 14th Street (West Village, SoHo, Lower East Side) and Brooklyn (Williamsburg, DUMBO, Park Slope) are where New Yorkers actually live and eat. Broadway is worth the splurge; TKTS booth in Times Square sells same-day tickets at 20-50% off.
When to Go
September–November or April–June. October is the sweet spot — crisp fall air (15-20°C), Central Park foliage, no humidity, and hotel prices dip between summer and holiday season. May is perfect for walking the city. Avoid mid-December through New Year's (insane crowds and prices) and January–February (brutally cold, wind tunnels between buildings). Summer (July–August) is hot, humid, and smells like garbage — but hotel deals are real.
Watch Out
Times Square is a tourist trap from top to bottom — the restaurants are bad, the costumed characters demand tips for photos ($5-20), and the CD scam (someone hands you a 'free' CD then demands $20) is still running. Subway is safe but confusing — download the MYmta app. Yellow cabs are metered; never negotiate a flat fare from the airport (use the taxi line at JFK, flat rate $70 to Manhattan). Airbnb rentals under 30 days are illegal in NYC — enforcement is real.
“The most overwhelming city in the world — expensive to sleep in, but the best experiences cost nothing or next to nothing.”
