Our Take

Best for: Value-conscious travelers who want serious urban culture — food obsessives, solo explorers, and couples who'd rather spend money on experiences than hotels

Seoul is the rare capital that's both genuinely cheap and genuinely deep. The palace circuit (Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung) is free or nearly free and legitimately beautiful. A bowl of knife-cut noodles at a pojangmacha runs ₩8,000. The jjimjilbang bathhouse experience — co-ed sauna floors, sleeping on heated stone at 2am — costs ₩10,000–15,000 and is one of the most authentically Korean things you can do. Myeongdong is a tourist trap with inflated prices; skip it entirely. Instead, spend a morning in Mangwon-dong (the neighborhood locals actually use), a night in Euljiro's industrial-chic bar district (look for the bar behind a fridge door), and an afternoon at Goto Mall, the underground shopping labyrinth beneath Express Bus Terminal station where real prices live.

When to Go

April to May for cherry blossoms — the city genuinely transforms and the temperatures are perfect. September to October is the other sweet spot: autumn foliage, comfortable weather, and none of the summer monsoon chaos. Avoid July and August; the humidity and rain make outdoor exploration actively unpleasant, and January–February is brutal cold with little payoff.

Watch Out

Use KakaoTaxi instead of hailing street taxis — meter fraud is documented and the app shows the fare upfront. Two scams disproportionately target tourists in Hongdae and Insadong: strangers who invite you to 'cultural ceremonies' (front organizations for cult recruitment) and 'friendly locals' who approach travelers who've recently lost relatives with spiritual ceremony pitches. Both are persistent. If someone approaches you with unusual friendliness and an invitation to something informal, decline and walk.

Seoul is what happens when a world-class city also happens to be affordable — go before the rest of the world figures that out.
