🇲🇦 Marrakech

Our Take
Best for: Adventurous couples and solo travelers who want North Africa's most immersive city at budget prices
Marrakech is the destination that scrambles your senses in the best way. Jemaa el-Fna square at dusk — smoke from grilled lamb, drums from Gnawa musicians, orange juice sellers shouting — is unlike anything else on Earth. The medina's labyrinthine souks are genuinely disorienting and genuinely rewarding if you embrace the chaos. A chicken tagine with preserved lemon at a local spot runs 35 MAD ($3.50). A night in a gorgeous riad with a courtyard pool runs $46-80. The Atlas Mountains are a 90-minute drive for day hikes. The Sahara desert is a day trip for camel rides and overnight camps.
When to Go
March–April or October–November. Spring has ideal temps (23-25°C highs) and blooming gardens. October is the sweet spot — summer heat has broken, crowds are moderate, and riads have shoulder-season pricing. Avoid July–August: 40°C+ heat makes the medina unbearable. Check Ramadan dates — it shifts yearly and affects daytime restaurant availability.
Watch Out
Aggressive sales tactics in the souks are the norm, not the exception — say 'la shukran' (no thank you) firmly and keep walking. Tourist-area prices can be 2-3x local prices; eat where locals eat. Petit taxis should use the meter — negotiate before getting in. Drink only bottled water. The Jemaa el-Fna snake charmers and henna artists will demand payment for photos.
“North Africa's most intoxicating city — a riad-and-tagine fantasy at prices that make Southeast Asia look expensive.”
