Our Take
Best for: Budget adventurers and solo travelers who eat their way through destinations
Hanoi is the most underpriced capital city in Southeast Asia. The Old Quarter is chaotic, beautiful, and packed with food stalls serving dishes that would cost 10x in any Western city. Ha Long Bay is a 3-hour drive away and while the cruise boats are touristy, the landscape genuinely delivers. Together, they make a 5-7 day itinerary that's hard to beat on value.
When to Go
October to December. Autumn in Hanoi is genuinely pleasant (20-25°C) with clear skies for Ha Long Bay. Avoid June-August monsoon season.
Watch Out
Hanoi traffic is legendary — crossing the street is a skill you'll develop. Taxis use rigged meters; always use Grab. Ha Long Bay has varying cruise quality; book mid-range or higher.
“The most rewarding budget destination in Vietnam — come for the pho, stay for the history.”
