Our Take

Best for: Solo travelers and digital nomads who want culture, food, and nature at rock-bottom prices

Chiang Mai is where Bangkok's energy meets mountain-town calm at half the price. The Old City has 30+ temples within walking distance — Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang are genuinely beautiful, not tourist-box-ticking. The food is arguably better than Bangkok: khao soi (coconut curry noodle soup) was invented here, and a bowl at a local shop runs 50-60 THB ($1.50). Doi Suthep temple on the mountain above the city is the single best temple visit in Thailand. Ethical elephant sanctuaries have replaced riding camps. The Sunday Walking Street night market is the best market in Thailand — handmade crafts, street food, live music, no tourist-trap pricing.

When to Go

November–February. Cool season (22-30°C highs) with clear skies and the Yi Peng/Loy Krathong lantern festival in November. Avoid March–April: burning season creates severe air quality issues (AQI regularly exceeds 200). May–October is rainy but cheap.

Watch Out

March–April air quality is genuinely dangerous — if you have respiratory issues, do not visit during burning season. Songthaew (shared red truck) drivers quote tourist prices; the standard fare within the Old City is 30 THB. The 'tiger kingdom' and some elephant camps still exploit animals — research sanctuaries carefully. Flights from Bangkok are cheap (~$30 one-way) but the overnight train is the iconic experience.

The best base in Southeast Asia for slow travelers — temples, mountains, food, and $5 massages at prices that let you stay for months.
