🇧🇷 Rio de Janeiro

Our Take
Best for: Adventure seekers, couples, and nightlife lovers who want jaw-dropping scenery and samba culture
Rio is the most physically beautiful city in the world — that's not hyperbole. Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado, Sugarloaf at sunset, Ipanema Beach backed by the Two Brothers mountains — the setting is unmatched. Beyond the postcard, Lapa is the nightlife district where samba clubs and forró dance halls run until sunrise, and a caipirinha costs R$15-25 ($3-5). Santa Teresa is the bohemian hillside neighborhood with colonial mansions, galleries, and views. Copacabana has faded from its 1960s glamour but Ipanema and Leblon are legitimately great neighborhoods — walkable, beachfront, packed with juice bars and casual restaurants. A prato feito (plate of the day: rice, beans, meat, farofa, salad) runs R$20-35 ($4-7) at a neighborhood boteco. The real cost trap is that Rio's top attractions all charge separately: Christ the Redeemer (R$80), Sugarloaf Cable Car (R$130), Selaron Steps (free, thankfully).
When to Go
March–May or August–October. March is post-Carnival: everything is cheaper, weather is warm (28°C), and the city is recovering from the party. September–October is Rio's spring: dry, comfortable (22-26°C), and uncrowded. If you want Carnival, February is the month — but book 6+ months ahead and expect 3x hotel prices. Avoid January: extreme heat (35°C+), packed beaches, and peak tourist prices without the Carnival payoff.
Watch Out
Petty theft is Rio's biggest issue — do not bring phones, cameras, or valuables to the beach. Use a cheap waterproof pouch for small bills only. The 'arrastão' (group beach robbery) is rare but real; stay aware of your surroundings. Favela tours are controversial — only go with community-led operators who employ local guides and reinvest. Uber is safer than taxis, especially at night. The metro is clean and safe during rush hour but avoid empty cars late at night. Tourist pricing at beachfront kiosks adds 50-100% — walk one block inland for real prices.
“The most breathtaking city skyline on Earth, best experienced with a caipirinha at sunset from Arpoador Rock — just leave the jewelry at the hotel.”
