🇻🇳 Hoi An
Last updated: 2026-03-27
Our Take
Best for: Couples and slow travelers who want history, food, and a beach without the chaos of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City
Hoi An is the rare place where the postcard version is real — the lanterns, the yellow walls, the river — and everything around it is better than you expect. The Ancient Town is a UNESCO heritage site you pay ~$5 to enter, but the actual eating and tailoring happen on streets outside the gates for free. Banh Mi Phuong is the most famous banh mi in Vietnam (Bourdain approved) and still costs under $1.50. The tailoring scene is genuinely excellent — a well-made ao dai or suit runs $60-200, not $500, and the quality holds up. An Bang Beach is 4 km away and refreshingly uncommercial compared to Da Nang. My Son Sanctuary — 4th–13th century Cham Hindu temples in the jungle — is a one-hour drive and one of the most underrated archaeological sites in Southeast Asia.
When to Go
February to April is the sweet spot — dry season, 24-28°C, low humidity, clear skies. February has the fewest tourists; April gets warmer but still excellent. Avoid October and November: the worst flooding in Vietnam hits Hoi An hard, the Ancient Town regularly floods at street level, and some streets become impassable.
Watch Out
Cyclo and xe om (motorbike taxi) drivers will quote one price and demand double at the end — agree on a fare in writing before you get in, or use Grab. The Ancient Town entry ticket (120,000 VND, ~$5) covers five specific heritage sites — walking the streets and most shops is free, and touts will try to sell you fake tickets. Tailors who rush the process produce garbage; budget two days minimum and insist on a fitting before paying the balance.
“The most livable town in Vietnam — small enough to walk, cheap enough to stay a week, beautiful enough to justify both.”
