🇨🇺 Havana

Our Take
Best for: History buffs, culture seekers, and adventurous solo travelers who want the most unique destination in the Western Hemisphere
Havana is unlike anywhere else — that's both the draw and the challenge. Old Havana (Habana Vieja) is a UNESCO World Heritage maze of crumbling colonial palaces, 1950s American cars doubling as taxis, and live son cubano music pouring from every other doorway. The Malecón seawall at sunset, with locals drinking rum and playing guitars, is one of the great free experiences in the Americas. The food situation has improved from its Soviet-era lows but remains Cuba's weakest point — paladares (private restaurants) are the move, not state-run places. A decent paladar meal runs 400-800 CUP ($3-7). The dual currency system is gone but cash is still king — bring euros or USD to exchange, as ATMs are unreliable and US credit cards don't work. Internet is limited to Wi-Fi hotspots (buy ETECSA cards). This is a destination for people who want to be genuinely somewhere different, not a polished resort experience.
When to Go
November–April (dry season). December–March is ideal: warm (25-27°C), low humidity, almost no rain. February coincides with the Havana International Jazz Festival. Avoid August–October: peak hurricane season, extreme humidity, and frequent power outages that affect infrastructure. The shoulder months (May, November) offer decent weather at lower prices. Carnival in Havana is in August — worth it if you can handle the heat.
Watch Out
The jinetero hustle is Havana's signature scam — friendly locals who guide you to a 'great restaurant' or 'cigar shop' where they collect a commission. The cigars sold on the street are always fake. Official casa particular (homestay) hosts are registered with the government and display a blue anchor symbol — book through them, not random offers at the airport. US travelers must qualify under one of 12 OFAC-approved travel categories (most use 'Support for the Cuban People') — pure tourism is technically not allowed. Keep receipts. The USD is accepted but euros get a better exchange rate since 2024. Bring enough cash for your entire trip — there is no reliable way to get more once you're there.
“A time capsule, a music box, and a history lesson rolled into one — frustrating, fascinating, and completely unforgettable.”
